I have a HD question...

Post by Nightstalker »

My present pc only has a 70GB hd which is nearly full. If I were to go out and pick me up another hd, would it be possible to transfer everything, including windows to the new one? My existing pc was OEM and came with no Windows disk. I need more space, but dont really wanna drop another couple o bills on a win xp disk if I dont have to.

Found this on microsoft. Dunno if this will help :doubt: NO...to all of your questions
you purchased a machine with an OEM version of XP that is tied to that
machine only.
The Slipstreamed versions you created are still tied to that Dell...they
will not install on another machine.

A new machine would need another copy of XP..wether you purchase a retail
copy or again a machine with an OEM version pre-installed is up to you.

bmx you need to stop answering things you know nothing about please....

Yes it can be done you need to have the software or equipment you might want to try a local computer repair shop for better prices on doing the transfer or find someone that you know that can do this, but it definitely can be done easily without affecting any oem licenses or warranties.. or you can just put both in & transfer some of the files to the new hd, that would be the easiest method.. you can have more than one hd!

TY Duster, that is ideally what I want, 2 hd's. One for all my crap, and the other for my games. I'll check my local shop and see what I can dig up.

Why don't you mind your own business? I didn't ask you for any help. If I wanted an answer from a 12 year old, I would have asked my son. There are very pc savvy people here and wanted their opinion, not a copy/paste from a website.

For anyone else want to do the same thing:
- You can use Norton ghost or similar application to copy disc which can be much faster than copying using windows.
- your windows will work without the need to reactivating if your mainboard is same.
- Based from my friend experience Microsoft allow up to 3 times activating your windows
- If you experience blue screen you can still fix it by choosing repair option when booting using windows installation dist. select repair on screen after EULA screen. You don't need to reinstall app
- registry information is stored at c:\winnt\system32\config (or c:\windows\system32\config). Backup this directory if you can. Most of the blue screen can unrecoreably damage this file. You can backup it using some available linux livecd

Obviously not, otherwise he would have posted himself, and I'd like to see him prove it.
